Well, I did better this time...

So, I got a bunch of building parts painted.  Notice the stepped house and attachable courtyard along with the tomb/mausoleum sheds in the foreground.  Behind, I have a two storied wall along with a bridge and a bunch of small wall sections.  I even painted all the buildings from the week before, too.  Cool!

Unfortunately, I didn't get the speeders painted.  Today was supposed to be devoted to painting but between having to reinstall XP and some personal relationship stuff at home, I had no time.  I did better this week having completed half my goal and then some, but ultimately, 50% is still a failing grade. :(

For this week, I am assigning myself something easier.  I started a five man squad of Terminators, but have never finished them.  I intend to finish them along with 3 more buildings.  Unfortunately, I'm going to have to work a lot over the next few weeks so I don't know if I will have time to get anything done painting-wise at all.  But we shall see...

Self assignments. . . by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #2 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 09:46:38 AM EST
are the easiest to shrug off.

I'm about to start a model project for the first time in years, so I'm kind of enjoying watching your progress here. It's pretty likely my progress will be even slower than yours. My goal is to complete one full model by the time the workshop needs heat this winter. I'm guessing I might make it, but only time will tell.

I knida feel bad... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 11:02:26 AM EST
...because I know I'm not assigning myself anything outrageous like "paint 50 marines in 1 week" (which is, actually, doable if I do nothing else in my free time over a week).  I can do buildings while I'm sitting in front of the TV.  I put the other minis off until the weekend and then crap happens over the weekend that I don't get it done. :(

What kind of modeling project?  I'm trying to have enough building parts to have a fortress or even a small town.  I've got some stuff painted already but one day I may whip out all the painted stuff, arrange it all and show it off how it might look on a table or something...

I'm working up my nerve. . . by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #4 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 12:41:41 PM EST
to tackle a Gundam again. My wife bought me several over the years because she knows how much I enjoyed spending a winter building a Perfect Grade MK. II and so she keeps trying to get me to do another one. I always felt a little disappointed in the finish work I did on the first one, and never quite got around to starting on any of the other one save some of the little bitty SD Gundams.

Now I'm hoping to do a good enough job I'm not embarrassed by it afterwards. I'd like to practice up and then tackle one of the big resin beasts somewhere down the line, but that's way past my first goal. One Gundam done properly will make me happy now.

I love the painting, hate all the other stuff that has to happen first.

Building is easy. Painting is hard... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 12:44:14 PM EST
...but the best part about painting is that if you don't like it, pine-sol (for Plastics) or EasyOff (for metal) will take a crappy paint job right off!  And you can keep trying until you get it right!

I'm just the opposite. by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #6 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 01:17:52 PM EST
At least with the things I do, the building is the sucky part for me. Gotta glue just right, put them together, sand the seams so you get perfectly smooth surfaces, prep, prime, re-sand, re-prep, re-prime. By the time I get to actual painting I almost get burnt out. But then I get all excited and whip out the airbrush and get caught up in painting.

Oh, you're one of THOSE... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 01:38:10 PM EST
These are the same people who mention that they can see the mold line on a mini.  I also tell them that on a table at arms length, nobody's going to see it and that's all that matters.  I bet green stuff would be both a blessing and a curse for you...

Green stuff sucks. by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 02:18:26 PM EST
I'm more a putty kind of guy.

I'm a big fan of smooth finishes on my own work, but I'm not one of those dudes that runs around modeling boards and tells other people they need to sand their seams and use such-and-such mechanical pencil for their panel lines and such. I'm a critic of my own work because I want to look at it afterwards and say, "yes, I did that," as opposed to, "damn I wish I hadn't done that." Other people are free to criticize as they see fit, but I get amazed by guys and gals of all levels with the things they do that I never thought of.
